Summer

Summer is here and we have an interesting and unexpected conundrum. Our loyal students are home for the summer and incoming are the tourists. There are hordes of them outside, all walking the cobblestoned freedom trail seeking Boston's most historical sites, oldest restaurants, best chowdah, pubs where they serve Sam Adams that are a stone's throw away from Adams' actual grave. And while we are right on the freedom trail, we are not historical or interesting in the least to them.

Somehow we didn't see this coming. We opened pretty successfully, and this turn of events didn't occur to us. We assumed summer would be even busier than before-- what with all the tourists...

Here's what we've been doing: sampling right outside the store, liaising with hotels' concierges and speaking with freedom trail tour guides. We are on Trip Adviser, Yelp... blah di blah...

Of course we really are a place for locals. That's what we set out to be. However, being still quite new and quite a few of our migrant locals (read- students) are home for the summer, we could use the influx of tourists to munch on our frites. So this is what we are currently working on- how to attract the tourists! Any new ideas would be welcome.

Sponsor some Belgian Bike rides with local shops... get some people n spandex to show up on a weekend after a ride, watch those tourists flow in....

Offer something special to people who show up in spandex. discounts/to go frites/ water bottle packaging.

A lot of tourists love to do pub crawls...I would get with the organizers of these pub crawls and try to persuade them to be a stop for munchies along the way! Belgian fries and beer...yes. Or you can sell alcohol. Teehee.

You can sell alcohol too? Maybe you can come out with a "Boston-local" flavor...lobster pommes frites? Chowda frites? That would have touristic appeal...

Ok..so I'm having trouble submitting this comment (3rd times the charm). Here are some ideas: get with pub crawl organizers and offer them a %cut if you have Saus as the munchie pit-stop during pub crawls. Also, tap into the inner tourist foodie and offer special "Boston-local flavors." For example...Chowda frites or Lobstah frites? That sounds quite good...good luck! I'm swinging by tonight for a good ol' chomp.

The last thing we need is another place that sells fries. It's cool to go to Belgium or Holland and grab some street fries, but the guilt of buying them while not on vacation is too much.
